Curbside Theater // Bringing the Performance to You!
Back in March, when live performance was cancelled, Stephen Brown imagined, wrote, and took his show on the road. He says, “everything was coming to a halt, so I had this idea that I could make a high quality production in a very mobile, small stage setting, with the same caliber of artistry.” Fast forward six months, and Curbside Theater at SB Dance has performed almost 100 shows in Utah’s Salt Lake and Summit Counties.
Curbside Theater offers two options for live performance brought to your community. The “Delivery” model brings the performers to your neighborhood or driveway for a 5-8 minute performance, for free. Stephen says, “people make reservations and as soon as there’s enough demand in the same geographic area, we come all at once, with a route of four or five locations, performing for a few minutes at each place.” The second option, the “Tailgating” model, is a longer 30-min show in a more centralized location, at a scenic lot or park, for example. These shows cost $15 per person with suggested donation.
With winter weather approaching, Curbside Theater is wrapping up its fall shows on 10/9 and 10/10. Make reservations here: https://curbsidetheater.sbdance.com/reservation/
Otherwise, Utahns will have to be on the lookout for Curbside Theater when performances start up again in the spring. Stephens offers his advice to arts enthusiasts in Summit County. He says, “Just open your eyes, spread the word. Park City folks are super generous. In the end, our community ended up looking out for each other. Come the spring, the most important thing to do is to become a host for this kind of experience. Skip the middle person — you don't have to go to a big theater or produced festival in order to facilitate or further the arts.”
In fact, Stephen believes that the most exciting part of Curbside Theater is its ability to break down the obstacles that exist still in attending traditional live theater. These mobile, small scale performances that you can host in your own driveway, “destroy cultural impediments to the access of theater. This is a bridge that brings theater to our spread out lives that we live in houses with driveways in the mountains.”
Stephen’s thought process behind Curbside Theater serves as inspiration for our community. His artistic process, and transformation of a camper van into a mobile stage, fuses Utah to the arts. The shows involve singers, dancers, instrumentalists, original choreography, and music that reinvents classical songs from the 40’s and 50’s.
There’s nothing better than being in “your place, with your people” while a breathtaking performance takes place. Lookout for Curbside Theater on 10/9 and 10/10 and then again in Spring 2021!
