Gem Studio: a Modern Twist on Park City’s Silver Mining History
The Prospect Building on Park City’s Historic Main Street hosts a number of hidden gems, not least of which is a place you can go to create your own jewelry alongside experienced silversmiths. Gem Studio has locations in 8 cities throughout the country, 3 of which are in Utah. They host workshops in silversmithing, charms, and permanent jewelry, and visitors are welcome to their studio or they can arrange for a pop-up workshop offsite.
Lydia, who manages the Park City location, thinks this mountain town is a most appropriate place for a Gem Studio location, given the region’s history of silver mining; “Since Park City used to be a huge silver mine, Gem Studio fits in so well. It’s a place to make your very own sterling silver piece of jewelry, whether that be a bolo tie, a cuff, or a ring. Add a piece of turquoise and you’ll fit right in!” Lydia was born and raised in Millcreek, at the bottom of Parley’s Canyon, and spent much of her life visiting Park City, saying “it’s such a sweet escape. It’s fun to get dressed up in your best western-inspired attire and hit the town…I think I’ve always dreamed of being an artist when I grow up, and here I am 29 years later doing what I love in such a beautiful place!”
Park City’s mining history isn’t all that drew Lydia to the mountains. She also loves the energy of Park Silly, calling herself “a huge fan” of the festival and of all the live music events the town has to offer. “I think it's so important for people to have access to the arts, it's what keeps things colorful and full of life!”
Metalworking also runs in the family for Lydia—“My aunt was a silversmith so she taught me the basics of silversmithing. But I mostly learned everything when becoming part of Gem Studio.” She cites her creative inspiration as coming from the earth, and she often incorporates a western style into her jewelry.
Visitors to Gem Studio can also make pieces inspired by western jewelry traditions, including options such as bolo ties, cufflinks, inlay rings, keychains, and pet collars along with the widely popular options of rings, bracelets, pendants, and earrings. “We offer artistic experiences that come with a keepsake souvenir for the people visiting Park City from all over the world and I think that’s pretty special,” says Lydia, adding to anyone interested in silversmithing that “we would love to create with you!”
