Local Artist Feature // Kelly Franklin
Local artist, Kelly Franklin recently retired from a 38 year career as a mechanical engineer in aerospace, specializing in composite structures. “I retired as a senior program manager at Northrop Grumman, based in Clearfield. Who knew engineers could grow up to become artists?”
Indeed, Franklin has grown up to be an artist specializing in the metal arts. “I’ve been interested in steel for awhile but was a bit intimidated, it didn’t seem like something ‘girls do’, says Franklin. “About 6 years ago I took a day class at the Kimball Art Center, and then a long class with the University of Utah Lifelong Learning program. That’s all it took – now I continue to work at the welding studio once a week and do some work in my garage at home. And yes there are a lot of girls doing welding! I think we have a knack for it because we tend to focus on details well.”
Her metal works are often inspired by nature and living in Park City puts her in the midst of constant inspiration. “Living in the Wasatch Back and trekking in mountains around the world provides me with my inspiration,” explains Franklin. “We are so lucky to have such abundant wild lands in our backyard! I find I am really drawn to animals when creating my 3D steel sculptures. When I do 2D pieces (wall hangings) I can incorporate mountains, trees, etc.”
One of her passions is to make functional art pieces for other people – signs, fireplace surrounds, etc. “Providing a finished product to a customer that will bring them joy is really important and fulfilling. I’ve been able to complete a few custom opportunities and will really want to expand this part of my art.”
Franklin does not have a gallery but does have a website. https:\\mtnmetalart.com and Instagram account. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the Arts & Culture district come alive to show my art in a gallery environment. Until then, when Create PC finds a larger space I’ll be pleased to show my pieces there. And of course, I’ll enter any shows I can find.”
