Park City Film’s Twilight Drive-In at Olympic Sports Park

Encore! Encore! Park City Film’s Twilight Drive In Theatre returns this summer!

During summer 2020, Park City Film, like so many nonprofits, invented ways to make up for lost income and engage their film-loving fans. The Twilight Drive-In was launched without a clue for how well it would do. They felt confident it would be possible to pull off a few weekends and provide a space to engage and entertain our community in a COVID safe way during an unprecedented time with our partners Dragonfli Media Technologies.

“None of us could have predicted a 9-weekend run of films with over 10,000 patrons,” said Katy Wang, Executive Director.

Based on that success and locals constantly asking if the Drive-In would return, Wang expects summer 2021 will be a re-run of that success. “I can't tell you how many donations during LivePC GivePC came with a note saying "Bring Back Lebowski!!,” says Wang. “We decided that the unique experience of seeing a movie up at UOP would be a fun thing to do in any given year, so we are coming back this summer for another series of films under the stars.”

Drive in goers can look forward to a fun mix of films this year. Wang outlines a few of the first films on the schedule. “’Thor: Ragnarok‘ is not our typical fare, but director Taika Waititi brings a hilarious and slightly irreverent bent to the superhero genre - along with a diverse cast and storytelling style - that is exceptional. It's always a pleasure to present Chloe Zhao's films, and that her latest film ‘Nomadland’ won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, is even more reason to celebrate her success by showcasing her latest film. We're thrilled to be a part of Latino Arts Festival this year with La Bamba. I guess you could say that we're excited about all of our selections.”

Park City Film is making free tickets to ‘Thor’ on June 3 available for PCSD teachers as a thank you for keeping our children safe and engaged this past year under the most challenging of circumstances. Please contact them directly to book tickets (director@parkcityfilm.org) or check your school email for a special discount code.

Tips for those attending the Twilight Drive In this year include:

  • Get your tickets soon! These screenings have been selling out as we only have 120 spots to sell.

  • As with last year, patrons will be allocated two parking spots - one for their car and the other to sit in if they'd like to be outside. So, bring a chair and some blankets.

  • Small cars (think Mini's, Tesla's, sports cars) get front row premium spots.

  • PLEASE take a moment to figure out how to turn off your headlights while you car is running off auxiliary power. It's not something most of us do a lot, but it will save you some time and side-eyes at the drive-in if you can take a test run with your car before you arrive.

  • And finally, get ready for a 21st Century Drive-in experience! With the LED screen provided by Dragonfli Media, not only can we start the films before dark, but the picture quality is extraordinary. And the sound comes right through your car stereo - no squawk boxes - so that investment you made in your car's audio system will really pay off!
