Park City Gallery Spotlight // The Prospect Pop Up Gallery and Executive Suites
We are pleased to introduce the Prospect Executive Suites as our January gallery feature! Our monthly blog series showcases all of our wonderful Park City galleries on a rotating basis.
Every month we tell the story of a local gallery and the gallerists and artists behind them. For this month’s spotlight we spoke with Kelly Pfaff and David James of The Prospect Executive Suites at 2078 Prospector Ave, in Park City. The Prospect offers fully furnished executive suites that not only embrace the beauty of the mountain aesthetic but the artistry of the Park City community with gorgeous interior design and a rotating pop-up gallery.
Arts Council: Tell me a bit about The Prospect.
David James: We bought the building about three years ago and repurposed it into executive offices. Initially we wanted to contact galleries on Main St. and have them hang some art in our building to make it more vibrant. Kelly Pfaff, co-founder of The Prospect, connected with Pamela Quigley, a local artist, who was able to connect us to some galleries on Main St.
She helped us bring in some pieces from places like Terzian Galleries, Julie Nester Gallery and J Go initially and it evolved from there. We then joined the Park City Gallery Association and started getting involved with the monthly Park City Gallery Stroll.
AC: What do you usually do for the Park City Gallery Stroll?
Kelly Pfaff and David James: We usually celebrate by having an Opening Art Show with live music, food/beverages that is open to the public. This most recent theme was “Wild Thing.” All of the pieces relate to something “Wild”, and are hung throughout the public areas of the space here. Each exhibit runs for about six months. The current exhibit started in October and will run through March.
For each exhibit, we start by putting out a Call for Entry relating to the theme we’ve chosen and wait for submissions. Then we select the final pieces and strategically place them throughout the common areas. Most of the art is from Park City Gallery Association members and local artists as well. We usually end up buying a piece of art from every show. The beautiful red painting by Silvia Poloto - Observations in Red sitting next to us is what we call “The Heartbeat” of our building . At night you can see it when you’re driving down Prospector Avenue.
AC: Do you have a favorite piece in the space right now?
KP and DJ: It’s hard to pick a favorite as they are all beautiful in their own way. I do love the mixed media wolf sitting next to you. It’s a collage of words and it fits our recent theme of “wild” perfectly.
AC: Will you be doing something for this upcoming Gallery Stroll on January 31st?
KP and DJ: Yes, we do something for each gallery stroll so stop by 2078 Prospector Ave to check it out and we’ll put info for upcoming events on our event page on our website or we’ll post on our Facebook page.
AC: What inspires you?
KP: Being outdoors always inspires me, just going on a hike out in nature. That’s what we promote here in this building as well, love your work like. We try to bring the beauty that we see outside into our space.
DJ: I would say top of Guardsman. I love riding my bike up there in the mountains.
AC: Has the way you run and curate the gallery changed over the past few years?
KP: It’s been pretty seamless and we just try to improve each time, we’ve learned a lot. When we first started the shows we had more open walls but now that we have more people renting offices, we have less wall space available so we have to figure out how to fit a good amount of art where we can. But this is a good problem.
DJ: Having this pop-up gallery at The Prospect has inspired me to have a home filled with art as well. I’ve gotten spoiled being surrounded by beautiful art all day. Art brings any space to life.
AC: Why do you think art is important?
DJ: Art is like food and wine, anyone can appreciate it in different ways and for different reasons no matter what your status or background is.
