In this blog post we feature a favorite from Summit County Public Art Board member, Heather Stamenov.
She couldn’t just pick one, so she chose two! Voyager II by Zane Dekoff and an untitled piece by Vern Wilde. Here’s what she likes about these Summit County public art pieces.
Zane Dekoff // Voyager II
Coalville
I am very impressed by the ambition of this project and the idea of a teen creating a large welded public sculpture. Thematically, I love the reimagining of a playful and simple craft that kiddos have been enjoying for ages. We can enjoy the striking contrast in between the heavy rusted steel material and its original material - an easily foldable piece of paper. At the moment, it also makes me think more broadly of travel plans. These last 2 years, many folks have had to cancel plans out of safety concerns. The question of these aircrafts environmental impact also comes to mind - thoughts weighted with the need and desire to see family. All in all, this sculpture is a playful design and a thought provoking piece.
Vern Wilde // Untitled
Coalville
This painting strikes me with familiarity, as it reminds me of a quiet moment on a walk in Summit County. It is beautifully painted and I am most impressed with the colors. The gorgeous blue shadows in the snow next to the pop of burnt red dogwood. I wander to the sunlight catching the warm and light aspen branches and I follow the partially frozen creek curving and leading me back into the painting. There is no horizon line or foot steps. The layers of snow piles keep me in a peaceful reflection. This painting has me hoping for a good snow season.
You can find the Voyager II sculpture on Main St. in Coalville. You can find the Vern Wilde painting in that Summit County Courthouse in Coalville.
