GREASE The Musical Set to Take the Egyptian Theatre Stage
Romance, singing, dancing and lots and lots of high school drama, 1950s style, is about to unfold on the stage of Park City’s historic Egyptian Theatre. Ziegeld Theatre’s production of GREASE runs July 1 through 17.
Beloved as both a stage play and film, Grease remains one of the most popular musicals of all time and is the perfect slice of Americana along with the parades, festivals and fireworks that symbolize summer in Park City.
Director, Eb Madsen, reminds us the senior class of Rydell High School are literally, the generation who grew up building what became known as ‘The American Dream’. “All the students are products of the men and women reuniting after WWII was over.”
Does a 1950's cast of kids still have experiences and life lessons we can relate to six decades later? Madsen admits, there are challenges to producing in our Woke Era. “It deals with a lot of bullying, misogyny, sexism, gay bashing, racism, and crass material. Instead of shying away from the material I've tried to confront it and blow it up a bit to the point that it becomes more of a satire of the 1950's. That way we can all watch, have a good laugh and be thankful things have changed since.”
Summer Nights, Greased Lightning and You’re the One that I Want will have audiences singing along with their favorite Rydell High classmates.
“The chemistry between Danny (Angel Martinez) and Sandy (Sydney McAlister) is amazing,” observes Madsen. “They are both incredible young talents, and they are so stinking cute together. This entire cast has great chemistry. It really feels like I'm back in high school, but in the best possible way”.
The production is rated PG-13 due to some racy material. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 8 pm with Sunday shows beginning at 6 pm. Go to Parkcityshows.com for tickets.
