Experiencing the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera Pop-Up Concerts Throughout Summit County
Artists from both the Utah Symphony and Utah Opera resident artist programs performed at pop-up community concerts at locations around Summit County throughout the month of June at the following locations:
June 15th // 1pm at Coalville City Hall
June 17th // 6pm at Summit County Library Kamas Branch
June 19th // 6pm at Summit County Library Kimball Branch
Each pop-up concert offered listeners with a unique musical experience, and all performances utilized the beautifully decorated Art Pianos for All, providing an experience that was both visually and auditorily appealing.
I attended the community pop-up concert at the Kimball Library on June 19th where Travis Perterson, the Principal Trumpet player for the Utah Symphony enlightened listeners with music he has enjoyed playing throughout his professional career. Peterson began playing the trumpet at the young age of 10 in his school jazz band, and has since devoted himself to the practice and education of music. He was accompanied by an amazing Utah Symphony pianist for the duration of the half-an-hour concert.
The experience was unlike any concert one would attend at a typical concert hall. Community members had no assigned seats, were not dressed in their evening attire and some were even taken by surprise at the unexpected musical performance. A number of community members stopped by to listen to the beautiful music taking place right outside of the Kimball Branch Library.
The surroundings gave the concert an interesting flare too. Since the performance was outside, there was a nice breeze cooling the crowd, and birds chirped along with the sound of the piano and trumpet, as if they too were creating their own music.
Listening to music, enjoying the beginnings of Park City’s summer and admiring the views of the mountains from the library all added to the experience.
Here’s a snapshot of what other audience members thought of these pop-up concerts.
“Its fantastic to put that quality of culture out in the community like that. To get the Principal Trumpet player from the Utah Symphony playing is fantastic, and it’s great to be able to expose my kids to that level of music.”
-Dave, Band Teacher at South Summit High School
“I enjoyed the performance so much! It was so exciting to have it here at the library. People are here for literature but literature is so connected to music. It’s so exciting to see these art pianos played by such amazing musicians.”
-Destiny, Summit County Library
“I loved it! We’re all going about our busy days and to just stumble upon a pop-up concert from the Utah Symphony right here in our community is amazing! The level of professionalism that these guys bring to the table is just incredible and I just feel so lucky to have come by here and to have heard this. It made my whole day!”
-Debbie Sebek, Arts Council Board Member
