We are pleased to introduce our latest installment in our monthly blog series that showcases our wonderful Park City galleries. A prestigious and diverse art scene awaits visitors and local art aficionados alike throughout Park City’s historic district and beyond.

Every month we tell the story of a local gallery and the gallerists and artists behind them. For this month’s spotlight we spoke with Lunds Fine Art Gallery owner, Allen Lund, who’s gallery is located on 591 Main St. in Park City. Check out Lunds Fine Art website here, to find out more about them and stay on top of upcoming exhibits, events and more!

Arts Council: Tell me a bit about Lunds Fine Art Gallery.

Allen Lund: My aunt and uncle owned a gallery originally, and when they wanted to retire, they suggested that I take over. I opened this gallery with my mom. Her and my dad are professional painters. My aunt is a professional painter and jeweler as well. My brother is a jeweler too. So this started out as a family event and evolved into what it is now.

AC: What kind of art do you feature in your gallery?

AL: I look for things that are very unique and different from things you’re going to see anywhere else. I want to carry things that are handcrafted that I would keep or collect myself. I seek out artists that I know and like.

AC: Do you have a favorite piece or artist in the gallery?

AL: Everything I put on the wall, there is something I love about it. I paint based on emotions so every painting is based on emotions. Some resonate more at certain times than others. Behind me are a series of glasswork flowers that my mom started and I finished. I’m carrying it on because it’s a tradition I want to keep going

AC: Tell me about your upcoming shows.

AL: We have trunk shows for the jewelers and then we’ll have artists that come in for a weekend or two and they will paint or demonstrate for our patrons. We have a lot of things coming up in the next season.

AC: When you’re painting, what do you find inspiring?

AL: Everything outside. I can walk outside and be inspired in five minutes. I love painting the Uintas, Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, the beauty is everywhere.

AC: Has the way you chosen art for the gallery transformed over the years?

AL: I’ve transformed based on the way trends are moving. I don’t want to be on the front line of a trend but I want to be in the middle of it. So we will carry everything from western to contemporary. Three fourths of the artists that I carry, I actually own work of.

AC: Why do you think art is important

AL: I don’t think it’s just important, I think it’s critical. People that think art isn’t a big deal, I’ll put art in their home for six months to a year and then I’ll take it out and then they get it. They’re like I can’t live without it. There’s something energetic about it. When you have a painting, you have the artist’s energy and that is resonating. It feeds your soul, it feeds who you are.

I had a lady who was dying of cancer and she bought a painting of mine and she put it in her room and looked at it everyday and she said, “This is what inspired me every single day.” So art is critical.
