Kimball Art Center Offers Open Studio Evening for Curious Creatives

The Kimball Art Center offers a variety of visual arts classes for our community to enjoy. Many creatives love to make art, but some don’t know exactly what type of art they enjoy creating. To help people overcome that hurdle of deciding how to express their creativity, in addition to satiating a craving to explore the creative process, the KAC has programmed an Open Studio Evening that allows students to experiment with different types of visual arts media.

The event will be held on Thursday, August 30 from 6-8:30pm. Participants will be able to sign up for two classes. The first class is chosen upon arrival, and sign ups for the second class will be available after the first class. Registration for both classes are first come, first served.

Ultimately, the Kimball Art Center wants people to be able to take the class of their choice. They also want to give people the exposure to different types of art making, and potentially try an art form that they hadn’t considered.

In the class description, the Kimball Art Center explains that “it’s similar to being devoted to a literary genre, but one day getting a strong recommendation to read a book in a completely different category and loving it. Sometimes we don’t know what we’ll enjoy until we try it.”

Attendees will be able to select two artistic mediums out of the following offerings:

  • Small Metals — Create a custom pendant by stamping it with meaningful letters, numbers, or a design.

  • Printmaking — Using stencils, you’ll learn about the screen printing process to create a one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Portrait drawing — Working from others in the class, you will learn various portrait drawing techniques while sketching poses using either charcoal or colored pencils.

  • Ceramics —Make and decorate vases from soft clay slabs for a one of a kind centerpiece.

  • Painting — Discover how to create a watercolor floral with dramatic design, flowing colors, and captivating light and shadows.

  • Welding — Try your hand at metalworking using MIG welders, torches, cutters, and grinders, to bend, shape, or mold ideas into art.

Art materials are included, and there will also be artist demonstrations lead by teachers during the class along with personalized instruction. hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will also be available. Doors open at 6pm for class sign up. The class costs $35.

Go get your hands dirty, satiate that creative craving, and try something new. You may have a hidden artistic talent that’s dying to be released! More at kimballartcenter.org.
