In this blog series we have been featuring Summit County Public Art Board Member’s favorite local art pieces. See Summit County art collection through new eyes and experience what makes these pieces so special according to our Summit County Public Art Board members.  In our most recent post we feature a favorite from Summit County Public Art Board member, Minda Stockdale.

Her favorite piece comes from the Summit County Fine Art Collection. It is called “Turtle” and was created by local youth, Brennan Flach. His piece comes from the 2020 Summit County Fair Fine Art Show. Each year, the Fine Arts Show offers residents from novice to the professional the opportunity to exhibit their craft in a public display. It includes: Fine Art painting, drawing, photography, pottery, sculpture, and ceramics. Last year’s display was held virtually on the Arts Council’s website due to COVID-19.

From the selection of fine art that is submitted to the show, a few are chosen as finalists, the artist is awarded a prize and the piece is acquired by the County.

Minda explains, “Brennan’s piece is a great example of how the Summit County Fine Art Collection reflects the diversity and creativity of the Summit County community. One of my favorite aspects of this collection is its collection policy, where local professional and amateur artists exhibit at the The Fine Arts Show during the Summit County Fair, and if selected by the County Council, are given a stipend for their work which is accessioned into the collection. Although it didn’t happen last year, each year, usually members of the Summit County Art Board help hang the display and recommend their selections to the Summit County Council. I so enjoy being involved in this event as a member of the Board and thank the Arts Council for their support, and making the event virtual in 2020!”
