The Power of Story // Summer Programs at the Park City Library

The Power of Story Blog

The summer is a great time to challenge yourself to embrace the power of stories. Stories can be told in many different ways that can be fun and playful. The Park City community can embrace the power of stories at the Park City Library this summer through singing, reading, talking, reading, writing, and playing.

The Park City Library is offering a free storytelling workshop on July 10th at 6pm. Participants will hone their story and telling skills in this participatory workshop with Giuliana Serena and Nan Seymour of SLC's The Bee.

This class’s intensive combination of guided writing prompts, oral storytelling exercises, and practical instruction will help writers in crafting a short story from real-life experiences to share on stage at Park City Library’s Storymine Live Event on August 2nd. The instructors, Giuliana and Nan, are experts at providing encouragement and creating brave space for people to be themselves together. Participants of all experience levels are welcome - even if you don't consider yourself to be a "storyteller" at all. There is no cost to participate, however, pre-registration is required. Register now to reserve your seat by visiting thebeeslc.org/greatoutdoorsworkshop (additional information can also be seen through this link).

Join the Park City Library on the patio on August 2nd at 6:30pm, for a fun loving storytelling event: Storymine Live: The Great Outdoors. At this event, the community will enjoy live stories from fellow Parkites on the patio. Five storytellers picked at random from a hat have five minutes each to tell a true story about the "great outdoors" without notes. All ages welcome and this is a great chance to pack a picnic.

“I was originally inspired to bring storytelling to the library this summer because so many of us love The Moth Radio Hour on NPR,” shares Kate Mapp, Adult Services Librarian. “It’s not about telling a story about a sweet mountain bike ride, we’ll hear a transformation of the speaker which might bring us a sense of awareness and empathy – or it might just be humor that we also need to experience as a community.”

The workshop and storytelling event are presented in partnership with the Park City Public Library the Park City Toastmasters, and the Storytelling event is supported by Park City Improv.
