This year, the anniversary of the Golden Spike reaches its 150th year and Spike 150 has activities and events planned all throughout Utah to celebrate. One of the events is artist Zhi Lin’s exhibit “Chinaman’s Chance on Promontory Summit” that will be showcased at Kimball Arts Festival.

Emily Herr, from Richmond, Virginia, was awarded the project after submitting a proposed schedule, budget, concept design and mockup. “Putting together an application for a project of this scale is pretty involved, requiring research about the context for the piece (environmental, social, historical, etc) as well as logistics research.”

The duo explained that “having the opportunity to create a Steampunk version using a piano was sheer joy!” The piece called The Train of Wonders, and was completely made from found objects. “What’s particularly fun to notice is what those random parts are that make up the train. For example, the large smokestack is part of a cardboard tube used to pour cement pillars, its silver base is part of a megaphone, and the nose of the train is actually an industrial lamp head!”
