Diane Knispel, Director of Education at Park City Museum came to us from New Jersey where she worked at the Hermitage National Landmark and Historic House Museum. Diane employs both her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and certificate in Historic Preservation as she trains museum volunteers, schedules and organizes tours for school and scout groups, Main Street walking tours, Museum tours and lectures for the public.

I have been a resident of Park City for over 38 years. Shortly after moving here in 1979 from New York City, the Sundance Film Festival was formed. The festival had been a struggling venue called the Utah/US Film Festival when it was taken over by Sundance.
In the early years, it was a small showing highlighting the work of regional filmmakers creating independent low budget films. Easily accessed by the general public, one could purchase a ticket at the theater. As it grew into one of the most important festivals in the world, a number of women were at the helm.

The essence and mood of a scene in a film can be made with music (think the two terrifying notes in JAWS, Rocky’s pump-up music during his famous workout montage, or the simple image of John Cusack in Say Anything holding up a boombox blaring ‘In Your Eyes’ by Peter Gabriel). The music in these scenes made them iconic, and will forever be associated with these films.
That being said, the Sundance Film Festival does not ignore the importance of music. The Festival offers an array creative experiences throughout the 10 day event, many of them being performances. Every year the music scene is quality, and one company makes the scene especially interesting by bringing in the sound of Nashville alternative music into the mix. An array of artists, musicians and songwriters will showcase their talents, and this year, local Summit County musicians are also given an opportunity to get involved.

Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District, Park City Summit County Arts Council, and the Summit County Public Art Advisory Board have come together to develop a project called The Future is Now to engage local young people in the creation of an interactive street art mural in the tunnel under Highway 224 -- a literal and figurative connection point for the Park City community.

Sara Hutchinson, Programs Manager, explains why. “We changed the name from ‘Author-in-Residence’ to ‘One Book One Community presented by PCEF’ because that is a national program with great name recognition. Over the past nine years, it has morphed from a student-only program to one in which the local libraries and many book groups took part. We appreciate the support of our local libraries and love the idea of the entire community reading one book.”

She fell in love with the camaraderie and teamwork of the filmmaking process. After moving to Utah in 1990, she volunteered at the Sundance Institute eventually transitioning into photographer for the Sundance summer Labs. That’s when she really started to love, appreciate and embrace independent cinema in general and documentary film specifically.

This project came to fruition through conversations that took place last summer when the KAC first reached out to OTC to develop their Sip + Sketch / Wine + Watercolor classes, which are held at OTC. The classes are taught by KAC instructors, and are meant to be fun and accessible for anyone to enjoy. The wine, of course, is a nice addition to the art classes.
Jamie Wilcox has seen tremendous growth in her 6 years as director of The Egyptian Youtheatre program. The program offers from 15-18 weekly classes each fall and spring session and 20 summer camps for ages 5-18 and 2 outreach projects each summer for students age 5 and up.

Read MoreLive theatrical performances have long been a centerpiece of Park City's culture. In the late 1800's, the ornate Park City Opera House was located near our current site. On a warm June night in 1898, fire roared downhill from the American Hotel and quickly consumed most of the town, including the Opera House. In a Determined effort to restore live theatre to the town, the Dewey Theatre soon opened its doors in 1899 on the site of what is now the Egyptian Theatre. The Dewey remained a popular cultural center until its roof collapsed under a record-breaking snow load in 1916.
