Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming increasingly popular in libraries across the nation and the Park City Library is no exception. Kate Mapp, Adult Services Librarian, and Katrina Kmak, Youth and Spanish Services Librarian, first got the idea to offer virtual reality when they visited the University of Utah Marriott Library’s virtual reality drop in program. After taking a few turns on the virtual reality headset, Mapp and Kmak were sold and started making plans on how they could bring VR to the Park City Library.

Park City Follies // 18 Years of Lampooning Laughs
Park City Follies, the unique play parodying 'all things Park City' is taking over the Egyptian stage for its 18th season on April 20 - 22 and 24 - 29.
Director, Paul Tan and head writer, Tom Clyde, are joined by a creative team including Rick Klein, Andy Cier, Josh Martin and Terry Moffit. According to Moffit, “We work as a committee. All of us make suggestions, edit, and dream up story lines but Tom does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to the stage play.”

New Hot Shop in Town // Red Flower Studios
When I heard about a new glassblowing studio opening in Park City, I jumped at the opportunity to find out more. Art studios in general are some of my favorite spaces on earth. I love the feeling of walking into a studio space and becoming immediately inspired. Studios expose the raw creative, reveals the process, and allows for the exploration of new techniques. They give people opportunities to communicate and connect over creative ideas, and this is exactly the feeling I got when I walked into Red Flower Studios.

Park City Film Series Celebrates Earth Month
April 2018 is the 48th Anniversary of Earth Month®. The Earth Month Network recently published an article stating that “people from all age groups and backgrounds have one common thread to share: with all the advancements over the years many are still living in the dark as to our total environment; lacking simple awareness of issues and a direction to take. This is in part due to the increase in population density, industrialization, climate change, and apathy.”
Organizations and individuals around the world are spreading Earth Month knowledge and awareness through activism initiatives and educational opportunities. Our own Park City Film Series is screening two films this month to celebrate Earth Month and raise awareness about environmental sustainability.

Literary Art Proposals Take the Lead in Park City Social Equity Innovation Challenge
Park City Council hosted a Social Equity Innovation Challenge during their retreat in March. The challenge invited city staffers to come up with innovative ideas for a social equity project that is not currently funded. $50,000 was budgeted to fund the top ideas that will fill a need in the community. There were 13 total proposals submitted to the challenge.
The two winning ideas were presented by Katrina Kmak, Youth & Spanish Services Librarian at the Park City Library. Both proposals focused on literary arts and the latino community.

Book to Film Club // Connecting Books and Film for the Community
The Book to Film Club is the brainchild of Library Director, Daniel Compton and Kimball Junction Branch Manager Joe Frazier. It was started in February 2014. Compton and Frazier had been trying to host a book club for about a year, but it had been unsuccessful. Eventually, they pitched the idea of a a Book to Film Club, in which participants would first read the book on their own, then come together a the Summit County Library Kimball Junction Branch to watch the movie and discuss the story. The club has been a “great success” since, with 10-20 participants each month.

Dreams of My Comrades // A Dream Come True for Local Author Scott Zuckerman
Not every 'wannabe' author gets the benefit of having a Pulitzer Prize winning author as a high school english teacher. Scott Zuckerman was mentored for three semesters by Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes, at Stuyvesant High School. "He was a wonderful teacher. Colorful. Memorable. When I write, I can still hear his voice in the background as he looks over my shoulder." McCourt was among the first to encourage Scott to continue his writing, but then a medical career got in the way.

Getting Footloose in Park City
Everybody’s going to “kick off the Sunday shoes” when the Ziegfeld Theatre's production of Footloose comes to Park City's Egyptian Theatre.
Leading the way will be Aathaven Tharmarajah, starring as Ren McCormack. This role was made famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 movie. He has performed in a wide range of high school productions, but now, a freshman at Universtiy of Utah, this is his debut with Ziegfeld and in a starring role, no less.

Park City High School Theater on the Rise
Park City is known for it’s many world class opportunities it has to offer. It’s evident by the diverse array of languages one can hear while walking down Main Street that people come from all corners of the world to get a taste of our small mountain town. Many people associate Park City with beautiful mountains, cozy lodges, an amazing variety of outdoor recreation throughout all four seasons, and great art galleries. Hit Broadway Musical 'Hamilton' Inspires Letter Writing Competition for Utah High School Students
Many of us Utahns felt the disappointment when tickets to Hamilton sold out in a few hours last week, but there is still a chance for a high school student in our community to attend. The State of Utah, in an incredible public/private partnership, is sponsoring students from every corner of the state to attend a performance of Hamilton through The New Nation Project letter writing competition.The competition gives high school students (grades 9-12) an opportunity to write to their legislator about an issue they care about and propose a solution.

Challenging Landscape Photography Conventions: Nicole Pietrantoni at the Kimball Art Center
Ansel Adams said, “You don't take a photograph, you make it.” This idea is central to Nicole Pietrantoni’s work, which will soon be on view at Kimball Art Center. The exhibition runs February 10 - April 15, with a preview with the artist for KAC members on February 9.
Nicole’s work is based in the tradition of landscape photography, but she challenges its conventions, examining the tension between picturesque images of nature and the near-constant threat of environmental change.
